3D World Creation Made Simple With Quixel

As any good tech company, the name Quixel both inspires and confuses. But however you interpret the name, Quixel is a leader in bringing the real world into the digital space. A tool for creating everything you could imagine when it comes to 3D world creation.

Essentially, Quixel is a company that specializes in creating photorealistic 3D assets for use in the video game, film, and architecture industries. The company’s main offering is the Quixel ecosystem, a collection of software and online assets that can be used to create high-quality environments quickly and easily.

Megascan the World

This collection, acronymed MBM, stands for Megascans, Bridge, and Mixer. The Quixel Megascans library is a vast collection of scanned real-world assets, such as rocks, trees, buildings etc. that can be used in the digital world to create photo-realistic environments. Each asset in their ever-growing library has been scanned and optimized for use in all forms of digital media creation, with a specific tuning to real-time applications such as video games. As of today, the company has over 16,000 photo real assets in their library.

The next software on the list is Bridge, which is a tool that allows for seamless asset management and integration into popular game engines such as Unity and Unreal Engine. This is where users, like us here at MOONJI Production, can browse, manage, and export assets with ease – either tuning them into the other Quixel components or isolating them for our own use elsewhere.

More recently, Quixel have even looked towards mapping human faces to create a collection of over 50 “metahuman” presets – essentially computer generated faces that are photo realistic but unique in every way.

The third component of the Quixel ecosystem is the Quixel Mixer software. This software allows users to blend and customize the assets in the Megascans library, making it easy to create unique and varied environments. The Mixer software also includes a variety of tools for creating and editing materials, lighting, and terrain, such as 3D painting capabilities, texture sets, smart materials and UDIM support.

What’s even more incredible is that this whole ecosystem – its assets, software and direct compatibility with Unreal Engine 5 – is free at the point of entry, and offers simple subscriptions for the whole package. All it takes is an Epic Games account and a know-how around 3D world building to get started.
